Long time, no speak!

Synths were recorded by Ismo Monola during few days in summer. After that I finalized the guitars. After extensive rechecking of the tracks and that everything were in their place I finally sent the package to Dan Swanö for some additional clean vocal recordings and mixing and mastering. Today we are in the situation where 2 songs ("Enter" and "New Age Dawns") are mixed. Dan is currently working on the rest of the songs.

On Saturday me and Jarno went back to Santeri's welcoming arms in Drop Hammer studio to find the perfect guitar sound.

So, it was re-amping time. We had 2 heads and one cab we were going to use.

Used mics for the rhythm tracks were sm57 and e606. For leads we changed sm57 to md441. Sounds sweet!

Some info for the interested... the rhythms were quadtracked, leads mainly double tracked.

I'm going to make a guitar-related video diary soon. More info then.

Wow! Long time, no updates. Seems that time passes very quickly when you're having fun. September went and at the end we realized that Jarno had recorded all his vocals. So, I made a promise to the guys that I will have the guitars ready by the end of October (or November at least). Well, I was wrong. Seems that the life got the best of me and I wasn't able to start recording. So, finally I did some prioritization and started The Work.

I have used my winered Gibson Les Paul on all the Evemaster releases so far but this time around I decided to go with my ESP LTDs (VB-400 for downtuned stuff and EC-1000 for the rest) and maybe Tokai's Telecaster for the cleans. I haven't added any acoustic guitars yet and I don't know if I will but I have 2 laying around so I'll use those if needed (Ibanez for steel strings and Landola for nailon). All the electric guitars are recorded through my Presonus FP10 as DI tracks. Those will be re-amped later when all is done and accepted by The Producers.

We have sported the old-school way of recording with the album. As the drums are pretty much one take with no quantizing or corrections, I decided to use the same method with the guitars. So, when you listen to the album you'll probably be able to spot some "errors" here and there. I think that just makes it a bit more "alive". I have used quadtracking for the rhythm guitars, melodies are only 1-2 guitars.

Ville (of Moonsorrow fame, part of The Producers) will record the bass early February and I know that Eve (of MyGrain, Draugnim) has started working on the synths. Also Markus (of Omnium Gatherum, Manitou) will provide a few guitar solos. So it seems that finally the things are moving into the right direction and the recording of the album will be finished soon. Then it's off to mr. Dan Swanö for mixing and mastering. Yes, you read it right. Mr. Metal Legend Swanö will handle the mixing and mastering part of the album. And maybe something additional things but more on that later...

I will prepare part 2 for the studio report about the vocal recordings and part 3 for guitars (and possibly bass). Be tuned!

No, updates during July. Sorry for that. We actually had 3 vocal recording session during July and we got 6-7 out of 10 songs recorded (including the cover). Jarno's vocals sound excellent. Raw and broken. This is the way I like them!

We are recording the vocals in Barrow studios which is actually my home. I did the remake of "Lacrimae Mundi" on my home studio as well. This time I have my own room for computer and listening and Jarno is singing in the bedroom. The sound is actually quite good. We are using Röde NT-1A mic. It's connected to Presonus FP10 and that is firewired to my laptop recording everything on 24 bits. My "state-of-the-art" home studio pictured below:

As I said above Jarno is actually singing in my bedroom. It's still filled with stuff because of the renovation around the house and for this reason the room sounds actually quite nice for vocal recording; not echoing, not totally dead. Jarno seems fine with the room and listening:

What the hell?! The Producers have changed the lyrics? Again!?!

We have been recording the main vocals and some of the backing vocals during the sessions so far. We are going to listen through the songs and decide where we should have more vocals and what kind of backing is needed. The idea is to have one track for the main vocal throughout the whole song and then add backing vocals if needed. This is just to have the vocal track as raw and live-like as possible. And of course this will help the mixing process as well.

Jarno went back to South-Africa but he'll move back to Finland at the end of August. During August I will sort through the vocal tracks and record the guitars. Ville will probably record some/most of the basses on the album and Eve from Mygrain will be my helping hand with the synths. At the moment it seems that we are not going to use that much synths for this album but this can of course change if Eve will blow my mind with ideas. Hahah!

So now, guitars, bass, synths and Jarno's missing vocals in September. The album should be ready for mixing by the end of September. Damn, finally! *fingers crossed*

More to come,

Jarno wanted to rehearse some of the songs this morning. Tuska started last night. I was fresh as a duckling but Jarno was quite hungoverish and he slept on the floor of my "home studio". Despite the facts he was actually able to rehearse some songs to be recorded next week. Yii-haa!

I went through the drum tracks, listened carefully and decided that no edits whatsoever will be done. I like the drums a bit punkier and not always on the right place. I love Enkku's playing on these tracks. It's really lively but still precise enough for a metal album. So, when listening to the album remember that you'll hear how it was played. Cheers!

Enkku looking all boyish and anxcious to start working on the songs

Day 3 and final day of drumming is DONE. Mr. Annus did an enormous job. Thanks Enkku! We recorded remaining songs and the flow was excellent. Nice drum licks all around. Mr. DelMonte says YEAH! Enkku recorded drums for all the songs except for the cover we were supposed to record for the album. More info on that later.

Enkku grinds!

Ville grinds too!

Enkku plays nice cymbal tricks

Ville digs them!

The songs appearing on the album:
1. Enter
2. New Age Dawns
3. Humanimals
4. Losing Ground
5. The Great Unrest
6. Sweet Poison
7. Harvester of Souls
8. Fevered Dreams
9. Absolution

After the hellish night session with Enkku The Producers decided that the drums for the cover song should be recorded even though Enkku needed to leave for home and rest. So what to do?! Well, Ville is an old drummer (probably all you people knew that, I didn't) so, hey, lets record some drums! To be honest, listening to Ville playing drums after Enrico was quite a pain. Hahaha! And not to forget that the sun started to shine again at this point. And we being dead tired. Despite all this, we actually got the drums recorded during the early hours.

THE DRUMS ARE DONE! Next I need to listen through the drum tracks and decide if we need any edits or changes there. After that we should have songs with final drums and demoguitars. Jarno is coming to Finland for Tuska and around that time we will start recording his vocals on the album. I will also start recording the album guitars simultaneously. We decided that I'll record the guitars straight in the computer and after all of them are done we'll go to studio and re-amp the tracks thus saving us a lot of studio time and giving me still more time to work on the guitar parts.

Cheers and beers,

Day 2 is DONE. Mr. Salmi updated me on my mistake. We are actually recording 23 tracks of drums. Cool!

Yesterday was actually not as successful as I hoped for. We started the day with re-recording "The Great Unrest" as we felt it could've been better executed. We got it nicely done and then we moved on. We recorded "Harvester of Souls" and "Losing Ground" during the evening as well. They sound excellent and I'll add a video here later when I get it out of the camera. The only problem is that we were supposed to record a bit more songs yesterday. Well, what can you do? Today we'll need to record 5 songs. Enkku will have a sweaty evening ahead.

More info tomorrow,

Day 1 is behind us. The sessions started with me and Ville getting lost on our way to the wild woods of Malmi. Couple of phone calls later we finally found ourselves in some industry area which we were told the studio was located. Hurray!

After we finally got ourselves in the studio we found mr. Salmi already setting the drums up. Enrico had visited the studio already on Sunday night and set the drums to his liking so it was up to miking and soundcheck before we could start tracking.

After The Warrior (Enrico that is) came to studio we were able to start setting up the sounds for recording. This took a while and some careful mike placements... Like usual. We are actually recording 22 tracks of drums, my personal and also Drop Hammer studios' record. Evemaster are here! So, Enkku sat behind the kit, put on the headphones and started bashing the drums.

Just before 10pm we were ready with the setup and Ville had just finished his interview with Zero Tolerance mag for Moonsorrow, we decided to start producing and recording the drums. Enkku started bashing the drums a lot harder when the red light flashed so a little additional adjustments was needed. Those heavy hitting Lappeenranta-guys! Me likes them.

We started the recording with "Enter Newtopia", the opener for the album as well, and after 2 takes we realized that this is going to be a good session. Fills were flying, cymbals singing, double-kicks ramming... all in all, it sounded heavy and good! After and hour and four takes of the song, we got a winner. Seems that no "studio wizardry" is needed as the take was excellent from start to finish. Next one was "The Great Unrest", very diverse song with "1-hit blast", normal grinding blast and double-kick gimmickry. We took 4 or so takes and Enkku nailed it as well. At this point we decided it was enough for the day. It was just before midnight. Time to leave the studio. Back tomorrow evening 18 hundred hours.

We did really record some waveforms on the disk!

Today it starts! The recording of the new EVEMASTER album tentatively entitled as "III: Newtopia" starts officially today with drum recording in Drop Hammer Studios in Hellsinki.

The info in a nutshell:
The working title of the next album is "Newtopia". It is a concept album revolving around a dystopian dream or a fall of this one pitiful man...

The working titles of the songs are:
1. Enter Newtopia
2. New Age Dawns
3. Humanimals
4. Losing Ground
5. The Great Unrest
6. The Sweet Poison
7. Harvester of Souls
8. Fevered Dreams
9. Absolution

The album will be co-produced by Ville Sorvali (of Moonsorrow) and myself. Drums will be played by Enrico Annus (of Khert-Neter). There will be a few guests appearing on the album as on previous ones. Those will be announced later.

Lyrically "III" is a concept album. It is about a dystopian dream or a personal fall of a man. Musically it will be more diverse than "Lacrimae Mundi" or "Wither" were. It will be a bit more challenging regarding song structures and there will be paths chosen never walked before by Evemaster. More info later!
